Josef Trattner's project in the Seebensee area at Ehrwald /Tyrol
For nine months, the sofas are exposed to climate and nature. The changes thus caused in the pieces of furniture is documented in order to continue the project in museums.

From September 13th, 1998, until May 1999, Josef Trattner is organising an artistic project at the foot of the Zugspitze mountain. 10 "sofas" in different colours made of pure foam are placed at a height of 1600 metres.
The pieces of furniture are not just untouchable showpieces as they are in museums,

but are intended to be used by mountaineers. Like traditional alpine benches from which to enjoy the view, the sofas determine the view of the person who has sat down on them.
But as they irritate the spectator with their material and colour, the foam blocks themselves, as alien elements in an alpine setting, become the focus of attention. At the same time, nature is implanted with the product of a highly developed technological and material world, which stresses the contrast between artificiality and naturalness.
